At least 23 soldiers were lost after heavy rains eroded a ravine in Sikkim state, causing severe flash floods. In this remote area, near the border between India and Nepal, Lake Lonak lies at the base of the Snow Peak Glacier around Kanchenjunga, the third most flat place in the world.

Flash flooding is common during India’s monsoon season, which begins in June and usually exists from the Indian subcontinent by the end of September. By October, the strongest monsoon rains usually end.

According to the Master, meteorological changes are increasing the frequency and severity of monsoon rains.

With an area of about 7,000 square kilometers and a population of about 600,000, Sikkim is a landlocked state of India, located at the southern foot of the Himalayas, bordered by China to the north, Bhutan to the east, Nepal to the west and West Bengal to the south.
